Happy National Howl at the Moon Day! If any of you have ever seen a wolf up close (from a safe place!) you can share the enthusiasm I have for one of the most beautiful animals that walk this earth. Many wonder though, do wolves actually howl at the moon? Well actually… no, they don’t. Probably because the moon doesn’t howl back and from what we know wolves actually howl to communicate with each other; in particular for long distance communication. Wolf territories tend to extend very vast distances, so they need to be able to be heard over the winding terrain they call home. Howling isn’t exclusive to night, nor daytime – but hearing it yourself is absolutely unforgettable.
If you are looking for an awesome wolf experience I highly recommend the Lakota Wolf Preserve, located in beautiful Columbia, New Jersey. I’ve been to the wolf watch a few times now, and it’s incredible! Jim Stein and Becky Mace, the owners, have an amazing bond with the wolves and you can see it by the beauty of the interaction between each other. You will learn plenty too on your wolf watch including behaviors, how to help preserve the wolves, what they eat, all about their habitats, and even some funny stories that both owners Jim and Becky have! On all three occasions I’ve been blessed to hear the wolves howling, and I must say it will raise the hair on your arms. It’s just an incredible display of pure nature and such an unforgettable experience. I encourage you all, this place is magical and a MUST to bring your family to. Have you been here before? Please like, share and comment!
